This is a ‘Light Duty’ CNC router patterned after the original X-Carve machine using OpenBuilds V-Groove extrusio and solid V wheels, but with several improvements. The motion is driven by double stacked HTD 3M 15mm wide belts that simulate a rack and pinion system with the minimum of belt stretch. The V-Groove ways are protected from accumulating chips with way cove made with 20mm wide belt webbing. The machine incorporates a flush design that allows a peon to ‘belly’ up to the side of the machine by having the top of the frame deck over hang the V-Groove rails further protecting the ways and belt drives from accumulating chips. The main frame for the router is designed to be used as a table top style system, but is also light enough and stiff enough that it can be configured to be hinged to a bench top to allow the working surface to be more readily accessed. The machine is designed so that the extrusio can be easily obtained in standard lengths of 1500mm, 1000mm and 300mm, and used with out any need to modify their length. The gantry side plates, carriage and Z axis plates can either be made with hand layout tools, paper templates or they can be purchased from a CNC source like . Excluding the cost of locally source wood the machine can be built for around $1200 (including the CNCed parts from ). Minimal hand work will need to be performed, but a few parts will need to be bent out of sheet aluminum for cable chain and seor mounts. Also the some of the V Groove will need to have holes drilled in them. To facilitate this I’ve included a drilling guide that can be 3D printed. The machine was designed for light duty CNC routing/milling, but specifically for CNC mat board cutting with a special mat board cutting head (to come latter). As such the waste board design incorporates recessed cup magnets that will hold down sheet metal plates that can then intern be used to secure the mat boards with magnetic hold dow. As with most CNC machines, it would also be possible to mount a laser module and or a pen holder for marking mat board or any other material. The bench was designed to provide a lot of flat storage under the CNC for material to be cut. The design of the bench also provides a ready space for mounting the electronics. Draw in FreeCAD.
